In addition to service retirement benefits, PEERS also offers a disability retirement option for members who suffer a physical or mental impairment which appears to be permanent and prevents that member from earning a livelihood in any occupation. Eligibility Requirements You may qualify for monthly disability payments from PEERS if: • You are under age 60; Temporary or partial disability benefits are not available under the retirement law. Permanent inability to earn a livelihood is a prerequisite for approval of a PEERS disability retirement application. PEERS currently defines a “livelihood” as earning $18,000 per year.
